Mortimer crossed his arms, his mouth dropping in disbelief. “You are thanking the horse? She only saved your instrument! I saved your life!”

“That’s where you are wrong, young one. She saved my instrument and therefore saved my life, because I wouldn’t have a life, without my instrument. Just like you wouldn’t have a life without a sword.”

“And why is that?” Mortimer’s hands shifted down to his hips. A chill ran down his spine.

“Because you are a knight, of course! No other man would’ve jumped in after me.” The little man nodded in reverence to Lady. “And such a fine and brave mount no other would have.” He went back to caressing his lute, plucking a few strings. The melodious notes carried through the forest.

Mortimer shook his head. “I’m just a squire.”

Whoosh! A great roar sounded behind them. Fire crackled and sparks popped. “Well, I’ll be a scotch bonnet. Cooked in one burp!” Percival exclaimed, holding up a large blackened bug.

Mortimer wrinkled his nose. “That’s disgusting.”

“Crikey!” The little man beat at the flames licking at the edges of his cloak. Peering around Mortimer, he saw the dragon and darted behind the trees at the edge of the pathway, pulling the smoldering cloak tight around his lute.

Grinning, Mortimer made a slight bow to the little man. “May I introduce you to my friend, Percival, the fire-breathing dragon?”

Percival raised his eyebrows. “Friend?”

“Friend!” the little man exclaimed, pointing a shaking finger at Percival. “He’s dangerous! Already he has tried to roast me bones to feast!”

Percival dipped his head. “It was a minor miscalculation on my part, I apologize. I am new to this fire-breathing matter, and thought that, since you and Mortimer were both soaking in this cool weather, I could be of some assistance.”

“See? He is quite friendly,” Mortimer said.

Conflicting emotions flashed across the little man’s face. A chill wind blew through the forest, finding its way around tree trunks and winding around the dwarfs ankles. He shivered, and looked longingly at the bonfire the dragon had created.

Percival took a step toward him and lay on the ground, so as to be on the same level, even though he still towered over the dwarf. “Be assured that I prefer to eat vegetables, not travelers, peddlers, or minstrels. Please, warm yourself by the fire,” he beckoned. “As Mortimer said, my name is Percival. What may we call you?”

“Me name is Ivan McGoon, but most just call me Goon.” The dwarf shuffled his way to the warmth of the fire. “I’m a traveling minstrel, heading for Sir Emberly’s castle to entertain.”

Mortimer rubbed his hands together by the warmth of the fire and gazed at Goon. Could his luck get any better? Now he had a minstrel to record his great finds as well as a wonderful fire-breathing creature. He cleared his throat. “We are also headed for Sir Emberly’s castle. Perhaps you would like to continue your journey in our safe company?”

Goon smirked, but nodded his head, stretching his stubby hands out to the warm fire.
